Inauguration of the Lombron solar power plant

  • In June 2023, the FSL Group, which specialises in the storage and transport of frozen foods, and the photovoltaic energy manufacturer Urbasolar signed a long-term contract for the direct purchase of renewable electricity: a Corporate PPA (Power Purchase Agreement) under which a consumer company obtains supplies directly from renewable energy parks.
  • Under this agreement, FSL obtains its supply of green electricity by purchasing the energy produced by the Lombron photovoltaic power plant developed by the Urbasolar group and due to be commissioned in May 2024.
  • With an expected annual production of 5.1 GWh over 15 years, this solar power plant represents 15% of the FSL group’s annual electricity requirements and 100% of its daytime needs.
  • The Urbasolar group is responsible for developing, building and operating the plant.

The Lombron solar power plant was inaugurated today in the presence of Alain Gremillon, Mayor of Lombron, André Pigné, Chairman of the Communauté de Communes Le Gesnois Bilurien, Thierry Cozic, Senator for the Sarthe, Gilles Fort, Chairman of the FSL group, as well as numerous elected representatives and members of Urbasolar.

A strong commitment to renewable energy

Located on the site of a former sand and gravel quarry that has been closed since 2014, the 4.6 MWp Lombron photovoltaic power plant covers 4.5 hectares and symbolises the conversion of this site in favour of renewable energies.

Actively supported by the elected representatives of Lombron and the Gesnois Bilurien Community of Communes, this project demonstrates the commitment of both public and private authorities to the development of low-carbon energies and the energy transition.

The energy produced by this power station will be used to supply the electricity needs of the FSL group, a family-run SME specialising in the storage and transport of frozen products for nearly 40 years, via a long-term direct purchase contract for renewable electricity: a Corporate PPA (Power Purchase Agreement). This type of contract is an important lever for implementing the energy transition, and secures the supply of green electricity for the company’s needs at a fixed, competitive price over the long term.

Respect for biodiversity at the heart of the project

Left as a wasteland since the end of quarrying, it was important to breathe new life into this site, taking into account both environmental and landscape issues, so as to integrate it perfectly into this part of the Sarthe. In developing the project, particular attention was paid to preserving the flora and fauna and developing the biodiversity identified during the preliminary impact studies.

For example, the works schedule has been adapted to respect the natural life cycle of the ecosystems present, and the woodland to the east of the site has been preserved and is now home to bat shelters installed by Urbasolar. The developer has also planted a hedge of local species to the north of the power station, providing a haven for small wildlife.

All these actions have enhanced the biodiversity of the site and its surroundings.
